Close by: Málaga
Málaga is just 45 minutes away and perfect for a day of culture and shopping. Walk up to the Alcazaba fortress, visit the Picasso Museum and finish with tapas in the narrow streets of the old town.
The mountains: Ronda and Setenil
Ronda sits dramatically on the edge of a deep gorge, and its Puente Nuevo bridge is one of the most photographed sights in Spain. Combine the trip with Setenil de las Bodegas, where the houses are built into the overhanging rock.
Nature: Caminito del Rey
The Caminito del Rey walkway clings to the cliff face high above a gorge and is an unforgettable experience. Tickets sell out quickly, so book well in advance.
A little further afield: Gibraltar, Nerja and Granada
Gibraltar, with its apes and views across to Africa, is a different world altogether – remember your passport. To the east lies Nerja with the Balcón de Europa and its huge caves. And if you have a whole day, the Alhambra in Granada is one of Europe's most impressive sights.
